Tasting Notes on She Loves Shrew (Yeah Yeah Yeah) by Artistraw
Rich and bold but also lively and mouth watering – “She Loves Shrew” is one of those perfectly balanced ciders that you won’t be able to stop drinking. Starting with a mesmerising rich copper colour with orange highlights, She Loves Shrew cider displays loads of personality from the first glance. To the nose, it is a bit funky-the wild yeast has done an amazing job here–and wonderfully zesty. In the mouth She Loves Shrew cider is rich and powerful, with sustained tannins and a well balanced acidity; a good residual sweetness dances on the palate along bitter and smokey notes, finally leaving space to lemony refreshing notes which create a mouthwatering feeling demanding another sip in a perfectly circular journey.
As if this was not enough, She Loves Shrew’s label is wonderful–like any other Astistraw cider label. The artist is Lyidia who, along with Tom, founded Artistraw cider with the intent of producing wonderfully natural real ciders, boy have they ever succeeded! This is not the first Artistraw cider I have tasted, but it is the first I have had the pleasure of writing about and I cannot help but be enamored.
Artistraw is one of those cider makers that have all the elements to convert also those who are unaware of the wonder of cider yet: they make refined, balanced and elegant ciders, they present them with wonderfully colorful and dynamic labels and the add all the necessary information in the label, from how the cider is made, to the ingredients and residual sugars.

“Our beloved apple variety, the Knotted Kernel provides the rich, unctuous back bone of this delicious cider. The addition of Kingston Black and Yarlington Mill add a smoky spiciness, whilst a helping of zingy Brown’s makes it all come together. With a light lemony acidity and a subtle marzipan aftertaste, this fab four act naturally as one to create a pitch perfect cider which pairs harmoniously with strawberries and cream.”
Food pairing
As per the label, She Loves Shrew is a cider that pairs really well with rich fruity desserts–strawberries and cream is directly mentioned by Tom and Lydia, but I dare suggest adding also fruit tarts, specifically one of my favourite desserts, the crostata di frutta.
